Rheinmetall Automotive supplying solenoid valves to South Korea

Pierburg GmbH, a member of the technology group Rheinmetall, has won a strategically important contract for the supply of divert-air valves used in exhaust-gas turbochargers of vehicles with internal combustion engines or hybrid drivelines. The Rheinmetall Automotive subsidiary will then become major supplier for the entire global engine range of a renowned South Korean manufacturer.

The order now booked has a lifetime volume of over €30 million. It has been awarded not least because of the delivered quality during an already existing order accounting for 25 percent of the Asian automotive company’s total requirements. Through this Pierburg was also able to build up an excellent supply relationship with the customer.

Production of the components is scheduled to start in 2021 and the fifth generation of solenoid valves will be delivered. The components ordered are to be manufactured at Pierburg’s plants in Neuss, Germany, and Kunshan, China. They will be shipped directly to the customer in South Korea.

Pierburg launched into the technology for turbo-based divert-air valves back in 2005 and is today by far the world market leader in this segment. The company currently counts a large number of global companies among its customer base for this product, including all major international carmakers as well as all renowned manufacturers of turbochargers. In China alone, 40 manufacturers now source their divert-air valves from Pierburg.

After a throttle change on turbocharged engines, divert-air valves ensure that no "turbo lag" occurs and that the vehicle can be re-accelerated immediately.
