Rhenus Nominated for Heavy Lift Award
Rhenus endeavours to minimize negative impacts on the environment and is therefore investing more in sustainable technologies. These investments include the purchase of the first fully electric mobile harbour crane in the Netherlands for the Rhenus Deep Sea Terminal on the Maasvlakte.
“The all-electric crane achieves greater energy efficiency and enables us to push ahead with our electrification targets in Rotterdam," explains Peter van der Steen, Managing Director of Rhenus in Rotterdam.
The new crane on the Maasvlakte can lift up to 125,000 kilos. The 690-volt external power supply reduces operating costs whilst cutting noise and exhaust emissions. The crane was connected to the port’s power grid at the beginning of September.
Another sustainability project that has already been implemented is the equipping of both terminals and part of the 91,000 square meters of warehouses with LED lighting. This has reduced CO2 emissions and at the same time increased the safety of the terminal staff by brighter illumination. The annual energy savings are the equivalent of the average consumption of 13 households.
In 2021, four new electric vehicles are to be added to the Rhenus vehicle fleet in Rotterdam and additional charging stations will be set up at the terminals. In addition, at the Port of Rotterdam all the small forklift trucks will be replaced by electric ones.
