Destination: Unexpected

Sure, the bright lights and buzz of New York, Berlin, and Mexico City burn bright in our hearts and imaginations. But if there’s anything these times have taught us, it’s to look in new places for hidden treasures—to broaden our horizons, and in some cases even look closer to home—and to explore some lesser tread trails. Just don’t call them ‘second’ cities; they are first rate in our books.

A tour of the unexpected begins with a stop in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius. Set in the heart of the Old Town, Hotel Pacai is the culmination of a passion project by a team of local architects and designers—and a veritable display of this country’s roots. Next, to Lower Saxony where, in a charming town renowned for academia, Freigeist Hotel Göttingen creates a heaven for cultural vibrancy. The new-build property is well placed for this year’s opening of the Forum Wissen, the future knowledge museum at the University of Göttingen. Should southern Italy beckon, Palazzo Daniele is ready to welcome as only the Italians do. The knockout nine-room restored palazzo is a utopia of fresh handmade pastas, exceptional wines, and fully integrated functional art installations.

Jumping across the Atlantic takes us to the hip hangout of Austin Proper Hotel. Towering over the Seaholm District, Kelly Wearstler’s signature layering of textures aptly embraces Austin’s eclecticism. Staying in the sun, The Tuxon’s poolside summer vibes are undeniable. Located at the base of Sentinel Peak, and a stone’s throw from the excitement of Downtown Tucson, this Desert Modernist gem is a springboard to adventure. A last stop in La Paz, Mexico, means entering the warm sophistication Grupo Habita has mastered with their 13th project, Baja Club. This beautifully reborn 1910 mission-style hacienda is balanced by a new five-story extension, a chic pool area with a spa, and a rooftop bar.
