Climate Change and Energy Transition Require Resilient Power Grids
The energy transition as well as sector coupling require operators to increase grid resilience. Robust grids are no longer sufficient under the changing conditions characterized by a higher share of renewables and new consumers at the distribution grid level (EVs, heat pumps, etc.). Instead, forward-looking planning, decentralized approaches, innovative concepts and digital technologies are needed to create greater system flexibility and thus also greater resilience.
How can more grid resilience be ensured already during the planning and implementation of RE plants? What concrete measures can be taken to make the power supply more resilient? What can grid operators learn from each other?
These questions will be discussed in the international circle of experts at the Renewable Energy Grid Integration Week events. The three conferences in the field of renewable energy grid integration will take place in parallel in Berlin as well as virtually from 27 – 30 September 2021.
At the 5th E-Mobility Power System Integration Symposium on 27 September, for example, resilience-promoting concepts such as vehicle-to-grid will be presented. At the following 11th Solar & Storage Integration Workshop, the International Energy Agency (IEA) will address the topic of resilience in its keynote address "Recent Activities on Electricity Security and Climate Resilience". At the final 20th Wind Integration Workshop on 29 – 30 September, a separate session will be dedicated to the topic: "Resiliency Issues".
In presentations by transmission system operators such as 50Hertz, TenneT, RTE, Amprion, REN, Fingrid, TransnetBW and distribution system operators, the theme of international exchange of experience and increasing resilience runs through the event program, coupled with presentations on relevant topics such as sector coupling and microgrids, as well as in special sessions on, for example, the SINTEG project WindNODE or the IEA Wind Task 25.
