The mining industry is also striving for decarbonization

Barrick Gold, for example, has also joined an industry-wide initiative to reduce emissions from open-pit mining operations.

This organization is called Charge on Innovation Challenge and was launched by Rio Tinto, Vale and BHP Billiton. Support comes from Austmine. The credo is that the mining industry must also be at the forefront of tackling climate challenges. Innovative technologies are to be promoted to support decarbonization efforts. In the first phase, which ended 31st July 2021 mining companies joined as patrons, and more than 350 companies from 19 industries registered their interest.

The whole thing is a global competition that should lead to new solutions and concepts for electrification systems for trucks in all sectors. The aim is also to develop charging solutions in the mining sector and to integrate innovations from other industries into the mining sector. The first solutions are to be presented as early as next month. Initial concepts could soon be ready for site testing. The path to low-carbon mining has been taken and is an excellent example of the mining industry working together. Electrified large-capacity haulers and dump trucks could thus make an even greater contribution to reducing emissions in the foreseeable future. Pilot projects and conversions to battery operation are already underway at some mines. Barrick Gold’s vision is to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Raw materials are necessary for electrification, such as battery metals like nickel and cobalt. These raw materials are owned, for example, by the Canada Nickel Companyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVxHbwKH1j0&t=143s  -. Its main project is the Crawford nickel-cobalt sulfide project in Ontario. The company is also working on manufacturing processes for nickel, cobalt and iron products without carbon emissions. Hydrogen technology could also make a big splash in large heavy vehicles, for which it is particularly suitable. Platinum is particularly important for this sector.

A major producer of these raw materials is Sibanye-Stillwaterhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AfipT_NDTo  – with projects in South Africa and the USA.
