According to Gartner, a unified workspace makes applications and data conveniently available to users. A unified workspace combines the provision of software-as-a-service, virtualised and on-premises applications and data together with identity management and single sign-on.

The particular significance of the technology, according to Gartner, is that unified workspaces provide a cost-effective way to enable remote access to applications and data. Unified Workspaces centralise disparate software applications into a single platform so that users can access them through the browser without leaving the Unified Workspace.

Gartner sees significant potential for unified workspaces for organisations that want to realise cost-effective, easy and secure remote access to their utilized software applications.

The key drivers for the adoption of unified workspaces, as Gartner notes, are home office, mobile workers, efforts to simplify IT, reducing costs, and a consistent user experience whether users access their shared applications via smartphones, tablets or PCs. In addition, unified workspaces support a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) strategy and IT teams no longer need to manage endpoints.
