The 2021 Spring Edition of the Advanced Materials Competition Accelerator Announces Demo Day Winners
About the Advanced Materials Competition
The Advanced Materials Competition (AdMaCom) is a fast-paced two week equity-free Accelerator Program for startups with novel technologies in Advanced Materials. Organized by the Innovation Network for Advanced Materials (INAM), the program brings together the brightest minds in materials to make the right connections and to gain access to the broad infrastructure that the network is known for.
This year, INAM has decided to hold 2 programs: a Spring Editions and an Autumn Edition. In past years, INAM has invited startups to join them in Berlin for the program. However, due to the current pandemic, this past program was fully remote, making it easier for startups from anywhere in the world to participate.
The Winners
This edition of AdMaCom offered three prizes. The overall winner of AdMaCom was determined by the expert jury which included the following experts and members of the INAM Network: Gerrit Rösseler of Berlin Partner für Wirtschaft und Technologie, Ginevra della Porta from the SAES Group, Nik Raupp of High-Tech Gründerfonds, Willhelm Hüttenes of Hüttenes3, Ran Escher of Continental, Tonino Greco from Sony and Ralf Westerheide of Robert Bosch GmbH.
This year’s overall winner of AdMaCom was GrOwnValve from Berlin, Germany. The team, represented by Dr. Boris Schmitt and Xiaolin Sun, has created a new prosthetic valve for adults and children.
The Mentor’s Choice Award goes to the startup which had the highest rated score by the AdMaCom mentors. After each mentoring session, each mentor rated the startups based on specific criteria. At the end of the program, these scores were tallied to reveal a winner.
This year’s mentor’s choice winner was Lios from Dublin, Ireland. Represented by Rhona Togher and Eimear O’Carroll, the team came to AdMaCom with their product SoundBounce – a smart acoustic material with superior noise reduction for use in the automotive, aerospace, construction and power generation industries.
The Crowd Favourite Prize is voted on by the Demo Day audience in real time and this year’s winner was CompPair. CompPair is from Laussane, Switzerland and was represented by Amaël Cohades, Robin Trigueira and Nicolas Gandar.
The Startup Finalists
Biomodics Aps (Lyngby, Denmark)
Biomodics offers cutting-edge chemistries to improve materials for health-care and industrial applications. They deliver solutions which improves standard procedures without adverse effects. Their focus is to create a product portfolio making hospitals safe, improve quality-of-life and reducing health-care costs.
CompPair (Lausanne, Switzerland)
Current composite materials are sensitive to cracks, need expensive maintenance and are hard to recycle. Their solution cuts repair time from hours to minutes, extends product-life and makes the recycling process more efficient. CompPair brings on the market healable and sustainable composite material solutions to improve circularity.
COnovate (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA)
COnovate is commercializing a novel nanomaterial that is the world’s only form of solid carbon monoxide at room temperature and pressure with a unique set of beneficial properties. With this promising COPHITE composite material, COnovate will enable a world where LIBs power your phone for days, energize your electric car for long distances and charge within minutes, all without risk of fire.
Enlipsium (Singapore, Singapore)
Enlipsium is a spin off company from the National University of Singapore, working on nano-perovskite materials as scintillator. With our proprietary materials, we are now building X-ray detectors, making them safer, faster and more accurate. Our key target markets include Medical Imaging and Industrial Systems.
GrOwnValve GmbH
(Berlin, Germany)
GrOwnValve is fulfilling an unmet clinical need with a completely new prosthetic valve for adults and children, implanted using a low-risk transcatheter technique. Their valve is made from patient-donated (endogenous) tissue, giving it lifelong durability: a once-in-a-lifetime solution that is affordable for patients and healthcare providers worldwide.
iBeam Materials (Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA)
iBeam Materials seeks to disrupt the Lighting and Display industries by the creation of large-area sheets of bright inorganic LEDs. They would like to partner with industry to transform the world of Light by enabling a new generation of products that have new form factors and are more energy-efficient, brighter, and have very large growth potential.
IonKraft (Aachen, Germany)
IonKraft is here to make plastic packaging recyclable. Packaging materials for chemical products must meet high requirements in terms of gas barrier and chemical resistance. The current solution of multi-material containers compromises its recyclability and costs for functionality. We can deliver the same performance for lower costs, without compromising on recyclability.
Lios (Dublin, Ireland)
Lios is empowering the building of tomorrow’s quieter world – eradicating noise pollution and avoidable hearing damage. SoundBounce by Lios is a novel acoustic material for use in the automotive, aerospace, construction and power generation industries. It is up to 3 times thinner and 1,000 times more effective than traditional solutions.
NANOZ (Rousset, France)
Nanoz Gas Sensors give you infinite possibilities. You can integrate the latest Nanoz Gas sensors into watches, phones and other products. The detection range of their sensor is 4 times greater than other sensors, despite being one of the smallest models on the market (only 1.15 mm long, 1.15mm wide and 0.45 mm high). They also ensure that our sensors can be Selective speficif gases.
Polymertal (Haifa, Israel)
Polymertal provides a turnkey solution from development to manufacturing of sustainable parts. Polymertal is able to unleash the creativity of complex engineering challenges by applying metallization of polymers to introduce the all-new hybrid part solution.
QNA Technology (Wrocław, Poland)
QNA Technology is developing unique semiconductor materials, called colloidal quantum dots, and inks based on these. The company is focusing on the biggest challenge for this industry, working on development of blue light emitting, heavy metals free QNA.dots, with the dot’s surface compatible for different applications.
