Amendments to the Harmonized System in 2022
Automatic tariff code updates in Scope
Customs administrations and regional economic communities have a huge task to ensure timely implementation of the 2022 update to the HS in their national Customs tariff or statistical nomenclatures. However, Scope customers shouldn’t worry about tariff code changes, since Scope is capable of updating all changes automatically. With regular free updates and direct connections to ATLAS, e-dec and AES, Scope enables freight forwarding companies all over the world to create declarations according to recent regulations. With an included quick text search, all goods can be found easily, even if they are moved across the nomenclature and provided with a new tariff code number by the WCO.
Recent changes to the Harmonized System Nomenclature
The Harmonized System serves as a basis for Customs tariffs and for the compilation of international trade statistics. The 2022 version consists of 351 amendments sets covering a wide range of goods moved across borders. All articles listed within the nomenclature are categorized by certain characteristics and classified within different chapters, building the first six digits of a tariff number. The so-called Harmonized Code serves as a uniform classification of internationally traded goods.
The new edition includes some major changes to the Harmonized System with special recognition of new product streams. One area which is currently at focus is the classification of multipurpose intermediate assemblies. Health and safety features, such as diagnostic tools for infectious diseases, will also be addressed in the changes. The following product groups will be added to the Harmonized System nomenclature in 2022:
- Electrical and electronic waste, commonly referred to as e-waste
- novel tobacco and nicotine based products
- unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly referred to as drones
- smartphones will have their own subheading
