On the Berlin Tempelhof airfield, Mitch Evans and Sam Bird lined up ninth and fifteenth on the grid respectively after unfortunately missing out on the qualifying Duels. Both drivers performed impressive opening laps with Mitch gaining two places and Sam gaining four.
Both drivers and their Jaguar I-TYPE 5’s showed excellent energy management during the race which allowed them to make key moves forward in the final stages. Mitch and Sam were able to carve their way back through the field and into strong point-scoring positions with decisive, clean overtakes. They collected 16 valuable points for Jaguar.
In the final stages of the race, 27-year-old Mitch, made a bold overtake on António Félix Da Costa to bring his Jaguar I-TYPE 5 home in fifth position, demonstrating the efficiency of his race car. Sam Bird gained an impressive eight positions to finish seventh showing the race pace of the Jaguar I-TYPE 5 and a return to the points for the Brit.
Mitch Evans remains third in the drivers’ standings, fourteen points behind the leader, while Sam Bird is twelfth. Jaguar TCS Racing move to fourth in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship teams’ standings.
James Barclay, Jaguar TCS Racing Team Principal: “A strong double-points finish for the team today. Both drivers made up a significant number of places from our starting positions which was a strong result in this incredibly competitive field. Having both Mitch and Sam in the top ten was an important result given this wasn’t the case for many teams today and it will be important for the championship. Positively, we had good efficiency today so our focus is to now work on improving our qualifying performance tomorrow on the reverse circuit layout.”
Mitch Evans, Jaguar TCS Racing driver #9: “We gained good points and a solid result today, starting in ninth and moving forward to fifth is a positive result for the team. We will look at if we could have made a few strategy decisions a little earlier, as I had to use my energy advantage to regain track position. We’ll spend the evening looking at where we can improve and hopefully come back stronger tomorrow.”
Sam Bird, Jaguar TCS Racing driver #10: “After what was quite a difficult qualifying session for both myself and Mitch we managed to come home in fifth and seventh. I really enjoyed the race today, carving through the field. We had a good energy strategy and we moved forward and I’m really looking forward to tomorrow because of everything we’ve learned today.”
The eighth round of the 2022 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship take place on the reverse Tempelhof Circuit layout in Berlin tomorrow, 15 May 2022 at 15:00 CEST.
