10 years of the container port of Wilhelmshaven and other highlights

The NORDFROST Seaport Terminal is now the largest of the company’s 40 logistics locations in Germany and situated directly in the country’s only deep-water container port, the container port of Wilhelmshaven. In November 2021, an additional 40,000 pallet spaces were added to the original 105,000 pallet spaces divided equally into the temperature ranges frozen, fresh and dry. The fully automated deep-freeze high-bay warehouse also features a system for the automatic loading and unloading of trucks. A second hygiene zone was also put into operation at the site last year. As such, the location, which has developed into a highly efficient food hub for import and export, now offers around 5,000 m² of white space to customers for outsourcing process steps. Products, such as freshly delivered meat, are packaged here according to customer specifications, boxed and then shock-frozen and temporarily stored. NORDFROST employs automatic systems for the contract filling of chilled and non-refrigerated food products with brand-specific designs. A wide variety of packaging and formats is possible. All the required services, including seaport logistics services, are located under one roof, which enables fast and efficient processes and reduces transport costs. The actual port is currently experiencing exceptional growth and has a unique and valuable potential for smooth processes and procedures – it is further characterised by the best nautical conditions and a unique hinterland connection. Thanks to its own rail link, the NORDFROST Seaport Terminal is directly connected to the European-wide rail network and thus also able to offer transport routes to the other seaports and all major destinations.

This year, the seaport is celebrating ten years of serving the industry. Spread across 33 hectares, the site is now able to provide a complete range of services for all types of goods. As a result, the necessary conditions are now met for cargo handling via the port in Wilhelmshaven, especially for food products. A full range of transport services, including container trucking and a full-service container depot, perfectly complement NORDFROST’s extensive activities in Wilhelmshaven. The company also recently received a wholesale trading licence for medicinal products according to section 52a of the German Medicinal Products Act (AMG) and GDP certification for its site at the container port of Wilhelmshaven.

The German deep-water container port has once again proved its efficiency in recent months. Fittingly, the Hapag-Lloyd shipping company has acquired a stake in the EUROGATE Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven. Boosted by these exciting business developments, NORDFROST is now expanding its container depot at the port to around 4 hectares for the storage of empty boxes as well as fully loaded standard and refrigerated containers. Work on another roughly 10,000 m² drying hall is set to commence in the coming weeks.                                  

NORDFROST has already expanded its seaport logistics services at the company’s port terminal in Wesel on the Lower Rhine. Since April 2021, the company has been solely responsible for cargo container handling services at the site, thus offering the importing and exporting industry new access to shipping services via the western European ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp and Amsterdam. Freight services have therefore been shifted to the environmentally-friendly Rhine waterway. A new full-service container terminal at the port of the family-owned company for the storage of containers has already been put into service. Construction of a further 17,000 m² will be completed by the end of 2022. The project also envisages creating a cold store right next to the water. By combining all the relevant services, including value-added services tailored to specific demands, directly at the place of shipment, NORDFROST is helping to encompass multiple routes and transport provisions and achieve maximum efficiency and sustainability in the supply chain for the benefit of import and export customers.
