We encounter the raw material zinc every day in our lives

Electrical and power engineering uses zinc. Whether USB plugs, computer vents, in the X-ray sector or in fuse boxes, zinc has remarkable properties. Conductivity and electromagnetic shielding are among them. Even if the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word zinc is galvanizing, i.e., preventing corrosion. The world’s hunger for energy is growing, and digitization and data storage are also gaining in scale. When the world’s first battery was built, by Allesandro Volta, zinc was involved. The unit for electrical voltage was then also named after the Italian physicist (volt). In addition to lithium-ion batteries, there are still batteries with zinc today, for example in button cells or flashlights.

Today, zinc is one of the most important industrial metals traded on the London Metal Exchange. Besides, the metal is a vital element in the human body. In addition to zinc, copper and silver are usually also mined. Zinc mining mostly takes place underground, and only about ten percent of zinc comes from open-pit mining. Today, around one third of the world’s zinc comes from China.

Zinc production is expected to reach around 13.2 million tons in the current year. Zinc will continue to be indispensable in areas such as the automotive industry, architecture, construction and electrical engineering, as well as in telecommunications or aerospace technology. Companies with zinc in the ground should not be able to complain about a lack of customers.
