Berlin goes Barcelona: CityLAB Berlin at the Smart City Expo World Congress

  • CityLAB Berlin is participating in the leading international conference on sustainable, digital urban development in Barcelona from November 15 – 17, where it will host a stand and organize various events
  • One of the projects to be featured will be Quantified Trees – an AIcontrolled irrigation system for urban trees
  • Meanwhile, dialog with the international smart city community will be promoted at the LabCamp and the Berlin Smart City Night

Berlin’s public innovation lab – CityLAB Berlin – will be heading to Barcelona for the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC). Together with the Berlin Senate Chancellery and other Berlin stakeholders, CityLAB will take this opportunity to present innovative approaches to urban development in Berlin. Topics include the use of data and artificial intelligence for sustainable urban development, the new smart city strategy Gemeinsam Digital: Berlin (English: “Together Digital: Berlin”), and knowledge sharing with other public innovation units from around the world.

Dr. Ralf Kleindiek, Chief Digital Officer of the State of Berlin: “We’re very much looking forward to engaging with innovative designers from all over the world. At the same time we want to showcase the areas where Berlin is leading the way and can act as a model for other cities. In addition to highlights from the strategy Gemeinsam Digital: Berlin, we’ll be offering exclusive insights into our AI project Quantified Trees and inviting the international smart city community to share ideas.”

CityLAB Berlin events will kick off with LabCamp – International Edition on November 15. At LabCamp, innovation labs exchange ideas on common approaches and challenges in the realm of innovation labs, with participants including Dr. Ralf Kleindiek, Chief Digital Officer (CDO) of the State of Berlin; Michael Donaldson, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Barcelona City Council; Caroline Paulick-Thiel, Director of Politics for Tomorrow; and Dr. Benjamin Seibel, Head of CityLAB Berlin.

Likewise on November 15 at Unprecedented Solutions to the Climate Emergency, project lead Julia Zimmermann will present CityLAB’s Quantified Trees (QTrees) project, which draws on artificial intelligence and open data sets to develop a predictive system for watering urban trees.

Meanwhile, at Designing the City from the Bottom-Up on November 16, Dr. Ralf Kleindiek and Caroline Paulick-Thiel will talk about their experiences and highlights from the strategy process relating to the smart city and digital strategy Gemeinsam Digital: Berlin. At the Berlin Smart City Night 2022 on the evening of November 16, experts will share ideas on the topics of innovation, cooperation and digitalization while enjoying music and drinks. CityLAB Berlin is a project run by Technologiestiftung Berlin and funded by the Berlin Senate Chancellery.
