Tin – important metal for the future

Electronic products need solders, and thus tin. Electromobility in particular relies on tin.

In the middle of the 19th century tin came to new honors through the industrial production of tinplate. Tin shines with food fastness and can be used for coating steel cans. Today, the metal performs significant tasks in hybrid vehicles, in medicine, and it is present as a solder in electronic products. Cell phones and laptops, for example, contain tin. Around 200 billion food cans are produced worldwide each year with the help of tin, because tin does not rust. When copper is alloyed with tin, bronze is produced. Bronze was first used around 3,000 BC.

Tin is considered a conflict metal. It is a metal present in the Congo and is eagerly traded. Tin is basically divided into three types. If you bend a piece of pure tin, you will hear a crunching sound called a tin cry. The most important application of the metal is the production of solders, because in electronic parts many things have to be connected, i.e. soldered. The second most important application for tin is in chemicals. Compounds in the production of food packaging, pesticides, plastics or paints contain tin. In tinplate, metals such as iron or steel are coated with tin.

Then you get a corrosion-resistant surface that serves as a roofing or wall material. Tin is also contained in lead-acid batteries. There it improves performance. So tin is by no means a boring metal, and since it plays an important role in high-tech life, investors should also keep an eye on the metal.
