Lithium – the hope for decarbonization
Whether on land or water, zero-emission mobility is advancing.
A new fuel cell system has just been presented, designed primarily for shipping and featuring a special safety system, a pressure-proof housing. This should make it possible to design clean and safe ships. A modular design and a high level of safety could lead to a revolutionary change in shipping. Soon, a new hybrid luxury liner (Silver Nova) with room for 728 passengers will set sail. It can run on liquefied natural gas, as well as fuel cells and batteries. Other smaller cruise ships, some of which are climate-neutral and emit few pollutants, will enter the market this year or are in the planning stage.
For the hydrogen industry, platinum is the necessary raw material, without which it is not possible. Sibanye-Stillwater – https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/sibanye-stillwater-ltd/ -, for example, produces platinum and palladium as well as gold in North and South America and in South Africa. The company now also has its eye on battery metals.
If energy is to be stored, lithium-ion batteries are used. These contain the sought-after lithium, which is said to be in increasing demand. For lithium demand, including from second-life companies that give retired car batteries a new life, it will take time for material to hit the market. That’s because there is a shortage of old electric vehicle batteries. Electric cars are being driven longer and longer, so it will be years before attractive numbers of batteries that are given a second life are available.
Century Lithium – https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/century-lithium-corp/ -, for example, has the important raw material lithium at its Clayton Valley Lithium Project in Nevada. The first production of high-purity lithium has already been successful.
