Where the gold of the world is
Central banks hold around 36,000 tons of gold worldwide. Private investors are sitting on around 140,000 tons of gold.
Around 95,000 tons of gold are held by private investors in the form of jewelry, and around 45,000 tons are held by them as investment gold. Worldwide, there are therefore a good 140,000 tons of gold in private hands. And there are some countries, in which humans hoard particularly much of it.
One of the largest private gold treasures is in this country. But the winner is India, with an estimated 25,000 tons of gold, mostly in the form of gold jewelry. Because when festivals and weddings are on the agenda, everyone likes to reach for gold. Indian households are said to have around 25,000 tons of gold. Gold also plays a major role in Indian religion. Gold is often donated in temples there, so that the temple communities are likely to be sitting on not inconsiderable gold treasures.
There is also a lot of private gold in Turkey, where high inflation is driving citizens into gold investments and has been for some time. According to a recent study, the gold treasure of the Germans has increased by about 270 tons since 2019. Gold coins and bars account for just under 42 percent of this. And about two-thirds are flirting with further gold purchases.
Because gold, according to the survey, ensures value retention and inflation protection. Gold can (still) be bought anonymously as long as it costs less than 1999.99 euros. This limit has been moved further and further down in recent years. According to calculations, there are still mineable gold reserves of about 54,000 tons. How much gold is in China is difficult to say, but it is assumed that there are 20,000 tons of gold. Gold and gold shares should not be missing in any well-diversified assets.
