PYREG enters the UK market and supplies Net Zero technology for the Black Bull Biochar greenhouse gas removal project

PYREG, the European leader in high-tech plant engineering of biochar production equipment, is now entering the UK market, supplying Black Bull Biochar (BBB), a UK start-up, with a carbonization plant for an industrial site in Radcliffe, Manchester.

The German machine manufacturer was founded in 2009 and is the pioneer in the field of CO2 removal through carbonizing biomass residues. Its multi-award winning and patented technology produces high quality premium Biochar while providing renewable energy. When used as a soil amendment, biochar has numerous benefits to agricultural productions, such as enhancing crop nutrition, improving soil water retention, and increasing resilience to extreme weather events such as droughts. By using the excess process heat, the system supports and accelerates the renewable energy transition by replacing fossil-based fuels. In addition, biochar retains the carbon locked up in biogenic residues in the soil for several thousand years, allowing for carbon credits to be credited, which can be credited on platforms such as Puro.earth (Nasdaq).

BBB is a greenhouse gas removal start-up based in the UK. Their vision is to enable a sustainable and circular biochar market across Europe and the US. They are focussed on creating a viable commercial biochar product for agriculture, starting with the dairy industry, which could lead to significant carbon removal from the atmosphere, storing it in farm soils for centuries while improving soil quality and reducing on-farm emissions. Simultaneously, the renewable heat generated by the pyrolysis process will be utilized to help decarbonise industrial operations in the North of England.

"PYREG and BBB are closing loops by producing high quality biochar and renewable energy while removing CO2 from the atmosphere. This is a real beacon project, and we are proud to provide the technology. It doesn’t get any better than this!", says Jörg zu Dohna, CEO of PYREG.

"The biochar market in the UK is fragmented and nascent. BBB are building and expanding a sustainable biochar network of farms and industrial sites from scratch, overcoming barriers to entry. This can only be achieved if we help great manufacturers like PYREG entering new markets.” says Alex Clarke, Co-founder and CEO of Black Bull Biochar. And he adds: “This is a turning point in the UK biochar industry. This is the first time Pyreg have supplied a unit to the UK. BBB have trailblazed that entry route for them and we intend to help Pyreg scale up their presence in this market”.

BBB secured funding through the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) from the UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) after achieving success in the final round of the Direct Air Capture (DAC) & Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR) innovation competition.

About Black Bull Biochar

Black Bull Biochar (BBB) is a start-up with a mission to scale up the use of biochar – a leading greenhouse gas removal technology – by creating a first-of-a-kind platform and network that helps key stakeholders within academia, industry, agriculture, and government to overcome the systemic barriers to widespread adoption of biochar. By helping to increase the production and application of biochar, BBB actively contributes to the mitigation of climate change and the enrichment of agricultural systems.
