Silver in the colonial era

The voyages went to South America and Mexico, financed by the Spanish monarchs. Columbus and his discoveries are well known; he discovered America in 1492. During the colonial period, Spain controlled important silver mines in Mexico, including in parts of what is now the USA, Peru, Argentina and Bolivia. In Mexico, Zacatecas was discovered and became one of the most important silver mining centers in Mexico. Potosí in present-day Bolivia, discovered in 1545, was one of the richest silver mining centers in the world and played a major role in the global economy of the time. The mines brought immense wealth to the Spanish crown. Spaniards came to the Copper Canyon area in Chihuahua in the 17th century. Gold, silver and copper discoveries led to significant mining activities. For example, the Copper Canyon Mine produced more than 9.6 million pounds of copper, 48,000 ounces of gold and 860,000 ounces of silver between 1871 and 1954.

Mining was initially carried out underground through tunnels and shafts. The switch to open-pit mining came in the 1960s and 1970s. Especially in Nevada, on Battle Mountain, mining activities were enormous. This is how mining developed in the Copper Canyon region, from the early silver and copper discoveries to later gold production. Incidentally, the conflicts over silver and other minerals were part of the fiercest Apache wars between the US Army and the Apache. These wars ended in 1886. Precious metals such as silver and gold and other raw materials have a turbulent history. In times of climate change, raw materials such as silver are important for a greener future. In Mexico, Vizsla Silver and Discovery Silver are using state-of-the-art development and mining methods to secure silver supplies.
