Mexico, the silver country

Who owns the largest silver resources and who mines the most of it – a look at silver stocks could be interesting for investors.

What do China, Peru and Poland have in common? As different as the individual countries from Asia, Europe and South America may be, silver connects them. The earth is a planet on which the geology differs greatly from region to region, but common features can occur in very different regions as a result of the earth’s history. For example, Peru, China, and Poland are among the top three in terms of the silver reserves known today that can potentially be mined economically. Peru takes the top position with 98,000 tons. China is in second place with 71,000 tons, followed by Poland with 65,000 tons.

The main reserve countries are also among the largest producers of the precious metal. Worldwide, around 26,000 tons of silver were mined in 2022, approximately four percent more than in 2021 (preliminary figures from the USGS). China with 3,600 tons, Peru with 3,100 tons and Poland with 1,300 tons are among the top six silver producers. The USA only made it to ninth place with 1,100 tons, although the state of Nevada also calls itself "The Silver State". With 23,000 tons, the USA also ranks eighth among the reserve countries. However, the most silver, almost twice as much as number two, is extracted from the ground in Mexico.

Around 6,300 tons are expected to have been mined there in 2022. Silver mining there has grown historically over more than 500 years now, and before that the indigenous peoples, the best known being the Mayans and the Aztecs, had already mined silver and gold. In the reserve ranking, however, Mexico is "only" fifth with 37,000 tons, even behind Russia (45,000 tons). On paper, the available silver in Mexico would therefore only last for about six years. But this will not be the case. Again and again, new deposits are discovered or old, known mines and ore veins are expanded in their reserves and resources through exploration.

One example is the Juanicipio silver mine, 44 percent of which is owned by MAG Silverhttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/mag-silver-corp/ -. The partner in this project is the large Mexican silver group Fresnillo. MAG Silver also owns three other projects.

Another silver company in Mexico is Discovery Silverhttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/discovery-silver-corp/ . Its Cordero silver project in Mexico is one of the largest silver deposits in the world.
