Batteries from Canada

A huge battery factory will be built in Quebec. It is the largest private investment in Quebec’s history.

There is talk of an investment of around CA$ seven billion. Battery cell manufacturer Northvolt from Sweden will build the planned factory near Montreal on a 170-hectare site. Clean energy from hydropower is available nearby. Canada has a lot to offer when it comes to hydropower. 60 gigawatt hours of annual capacity, production of cathode material and recycling facilities for batteries will be built here. In lithium-ion batteries, the cathode (positive terminal) is one of the most expensive components. It is usually made of lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide. Europe, for example, is still very dependent on China for cathodes. However, this year in June, the chemical company BASF started producing cathode materials in Schwarzheide.

So, for Canada, the chances of developing a carbon-free future are now getting closer. The government of Canada and Quebec supports the construction of the battery factory, because the production of batteries for electromobility in one’s own country is definitely a good thing. The lithium-ion batteries are now the most important ingredient in an electric vehicle, more important than the chassis or engine. In Europe, the auto industry is starting to become more and more independent of countries like China. Today, there are around 40 battery factories in the EU.

Vehicle production plants, on the other hand, number significantly more, 322, so factories are being planned that can produce the batteries for electric vehicles. For electromobility to spread, a lot of lithium is needed. Companies like Century Lithium or Targa Exploration are taking care of this.

In Nevada, Century Lithium’shttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/century-lithium-corp/ – Clayton Valley Lithium Project is already delivering top-quality battery-grade lithium carbonate at a pilot plant.

In Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario, Targa Explorationhttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/targa-exploration-corp/ – owns lithium projects.
