iTernity GmbH celebrates its 20th anniversary: Two decades of innovation in data storage and archiving

Foundation and beginnings

The company was founded in 2004 near Stendal under the name MemoryData GmbH. In the early years, the company operated in stealth mode, laying the foundations for its groundbreaking technologies. In 2007, the company moved to Freiburg and changed its name to iTernity GmbH. During this time, the first version of iCAS (iTernity Compliant Archive Software) was implemented and successfully certified.

Strategic Partnerships and Internationalisation

An important milestone in 2008 was the establishment of a technology partnership with Hewlett-Packard. This partnership enabled the validation of various HP enterprise storage systems with iCAS and marked the start of joint go-to-market activities in the EMEA region. By 2012, iTernity had expanded into the DACH and EMEA markets and opened a subsidiary in the USA. This expansion led to significant international projects and a global trademark registration.

ITernity Awards

Since 2014, iTernity has been led by CEO Ralf Steinemann, who has been with the company since 2008. Under his leadership, iTernity has received numerous awards and accolades, including multiple wins at the annual Storage Insider Awards. The company has also been named one of the TOP 100 most innovative companies in the German SME sector five times. In 2020, iTernity was also awarded the ‚INNOVATIVE THROUGH RESEARCH‘ seal by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft.

Technological innovations and product launches

iTernity continued its spirit of innovation in 2019, launching a new product to the market with the iCAS FS scale-out storage platform. From 2020, iTernity’s solutions will also be offered as a service via HPE Greenlake. This is another major development. New partnerships, such as with Commvault, Fujitsu and STACKIT, as well as numerous certifications, including the ‚Veeam ready – Immutable Object Repository‘ seal for ransomware-proof backup data storage, are proof of iTernity’s continued growth and technological leadership.
