Battery metals are indispensable raw materials

The salt lakes in the lithium triangle, within the countries of Argentina, Chile and Bolivia, are among the largest lithium deposits in the world. Large amounts of energy are required to extract lithium. And according to estimates, the demand for lithium could increase almost tenfold by 2028. Cobalt is no less important for lithium-ion batteries. This usually comes from Congo, where it is often extracted under conditions that violate human rights and cause environmental damage. Of the 230,000 tons of cobalt mined worldwide in 2023, around 170,000 tons, i.e. the majority, came from Congo.

Nickel is also a key raw material for the energy and transportation transition. Nickel is also used in stainless steel production. The largest quantities are mined in Indonesia, which also has the largest known nickel reserves in the world. Nickel mining in Indonesia pollutes the environment, and coal is usually used for further processing. And there is an export ban on nickel ore in Indonesia. For reasons of sustainability and market economy, a higher recycling rate for lithium-ion batteries is being sought.

From 2030, this should initially be twelve percent for cobalt and four percent for nickel and lithium. So, there is still a lot of potential. It is encouraging for climate change in Germany that the share of renewable energies is repeatedly setting records. Lithium-ion batteries, which are used not only in electric vehicles but also in many portable devices, are used to store this energy.

The Canada Nickel Companyhttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/canada-nickel-company-inc/ – can provide supplies of cobalt and nickel for the steel market and the electromobility sector. Its notable Crawford project is located in Ontario and is wholly owned by the company.

Battery raw materials are the business of Green Bridge Metalshttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/green-bridge-metals-corp/ – and the projects are located in Ontario and Manitoba. The Chrome Puddy project in Ontario covers an area of 1,450 hectares.
