E.ON develops sustainable energy concepts for Hansa Center Bottrop and data centre in Essen

• E.ON and FAKT AG further expand their cooperation on sustainable urban development projects
• Increasing demand for solutions for sustainable homes, lifestyles, and work

E.ON will develop the energy concepts for the new Hansa Center Bottrop and a new data centre on Ruhrallee in Essen. For both projects initiated by the real estate development company FAKT AG, E.ON will ensure a climate-friendly and low-CO2 energy generation and supply. The two companies are thus further expanding their energy partnership for sustainable urban development projects, which was already concluded in 2018. Both in Essen and Bottrop, the rebuilding works are scheduled to start in 2022.

Hubert Schulte-Kemper, CEO of FAKT AG: “E.ON offers the entire range of solutions for greater energy efficiency and can thus provide us with optimum support for the entire diversity of our projects. Our partnership is unique and based on personal trust. The previous cooperation in the commercial sector can also be extended to sustainable residential construction projects in the future. E.ON offers innovative concepts there as well.”

Alexander Fenzl, Country Head B2B Solutions Germany at E.ON: “We want to further expand our offerings for clean, CO2-neutral energy solutions for residential, commercial and industrial customers, cities and municipalities. This also includes offerings for sustainable homes, living and working. With long-term, strong partnerships like this and a customer base of around 50 million customers in Europe today, we are ideally positioned to achieve this.”

Data center on Essen’s Ruhrallee goes green

A new data centre with an area of 700 square meters is being built at Ruhrallee 80 in the building of the former Ruhrgas headquarters in the heart of Essen. It is part of a network of data centres designed to connect the Ruhr region to the European cloud landscape and strengthen the regional economy.

The guiding principle for the development of the green data centre is a sustainable and at the same time economical operation. Energy supply plays a key role in this. E.ON will plan, build and operate the energy centres for the green data centre. The goal is energy-efficient generation of electricity, heating and cooling for the operation of the data centre and office space. The plan is to use waste heat from the data centre to heat the main building. Heat pumps will be used to achieve the appropriate temperature level. A dedicated photovoltaic system will supply the data centre with sustainable energy.

Hansa Center makes vision of "Innovation City" tangible

With the Hansa Center, a modern shopping, experience and congress centre with store units, hotel, cinema, restaurants and offices is being built in Bottrop. In addition, FAKT AG wants to put together offers and services in the field of electromobility. For example, e-bikes and cargo bikes can be serviced and charged there. An area-wide 5G campus network and numerous virtual entertainment offerings will provide visitors and tenants with the best possible digital experience.

As part of the conversion and expansion, the entire centre will undergo energy refurbishment. E.ON will develop, implement and operate the climate-friendly and low-CO2 energy infrastructure for heating and cooling for this major project.

E.ON and FAKT respond to increasing demand for solutions for sustainable living and working

FAKT AG and E.ON already concluded an energy partnership agreement in 2018. The aim of both companies is to implement sustainable projects in Germany and internationally. The cooperation relates to energy solutions in large-scale projects initiated and implemented by FAKT AG. Ongoing projects already exist in Recklinghausen, Bergkamen and Herne.

In the future, a further focus of the cooperation could also be in the area of sustainable living. Over the next seven years, FAKT AG plans to complete around 25,000 homes in the Ruhr region. E.ON wants to bring the energy transition to the residential segment with new, innovative solutions and services for residential energy systems, like self-generated green electricity, heating, and cooling as well as energy management.
