Everything is copper

For Robert Friedland, one of the most prominent people in the mining world, copper is "a national security issue."

Friedland, inducted into the American Mining Hall of Fame last year, sees hoarding copper as paramount to national security. And the statements of a man who has been called the best promoter in the mining industry (2021), a technological innovator and company founder are getting attention. Friedland is among the most prominent voices on energy transition and electrification.

The processing of copper runs like a thread through history. It was one of the first metals to be discovered by mankind. As the processing of copper was simple, it was used by the oldest cultures ("Copper Age"). Today, copper is a critical component of the future as a conductor of electricity and heat. From the simple power grid to wind turbines and electric vehicles, the red metal is necessary. More and more copper will be needed worldwide. For example, there are already forecasts that a ton of copper will cost more than $15,000. Problematic for a sufficient supply of copper could prove to be the several years of underinvestment. Projects or expansions of existing mines have often been postponed. Restrictions of an operational nature in connection with the pandemic have led to a decline in capacity. Economic worries from China are still putting pressure on the copper price, but this too will subside, and copper will gain the status it deserves as the metal of the future. Companies that own copper in their projects should therefore not be ignored.
