ICM: ICM: Could you start by presenting Boliden and your activity in a few words? Raymond Langevoort: Boliden is a base metals company, operating 5 mining areas of which the Aitik copper mine and Garpenberg zinc mine are the two largest mines operated in Sweden. The company’s smelter division operates 6 smelters; a secondary lead smelter in Bergsöe, Sweden, our Odda zinc smelter in Norway and Kokkola zinc smelter in Finland, the Rönnskär copper smelter in Sweden and Harjavalta copper smelter in Finland. Global e-scrap scene reunites in Salzburg
The electronics recycling community, which was unable to meet last year, returned to its traditional venue in Salzburg on 18-21 January for its annual congress. The busy exhibition hall hosted some 40 recycling solutions providers and the level of interest and activity in all areas of the congress, showed that this industry needed to meet again. ‘It is crucial to meet face to face in this industry, we are so happy to be back in Salzburg,’ one delegate said. ICBR Honorary award goes to Jacques David, battery recycling pioneer
The International Congress for Battery Recycling ICBR 2021, gathered in Geneva, has recognized the lifetime contribution to battery collection and recycling of Mr Jacques David. The ICBR Honorary award is granted to a person for remarkable commitment to, and outstanding achievements in, the battery recycling industry and its related fields: development of new battery recycling technologies and chemistries, environmental protection, the circular economy and sustainable development. In 1977 Jacques David began his career in the battery recycling business and quickly became a pioneer in recovering nickel, cobalt and cadmium from Ni-Cd batteries in order to reintroduce them into their metallurgical cycle. Black Mass is one of the hottest issues in battery recycling
Jacques David talks about the management of the so-called Black Mass produced from the treatment of lithium batteries ahead of the workshop at ICBR 2021 in Geneva on 24th September. ICM: What is Black Mass actually? Jacques David: Black Mass is what you obtain once a battery has been processed for recycling. Batteries are composed of metals including lithium, manganese, cobalt, and nickel. Once a battery reaches the end of its service life, it is collected, dismantled, and shredded.
