Berlinale Issues Call for Freedom of Movement, Freedom of Expression for Competition Directors Maryam Moghaddam & Behtash Sanaeeha
Earlier this month, the Berlinale was pleased to announce the selection of the Iranian film My Favourite Cake by Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha in Competition at this year’s 74th edition of the festival. Since then, the festival has learned that as of the time of writing Iranian writers/directors Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha have been banned from travelling, have had their passports confiscated, and face a court trial in relation to their work as artists and filmmakers. Die Berlinale hat vor Kurzem mit Freude bekannt gegeben, dass der iranische Film Keyke mahboobe man (My Favourite Cake) von Maryam Moghaddam und Behtash Sanaeeha im Wettbewerb der 74. Berlinale laufen wird. Inzwischen hat das Festival erfahren, dass gegen die iranischen Autor*innen/Regisseur*innen Maryam Moghaddam und Behtash Sanaeeha ein Reiseverbot verhängt wurde. Ihre Pässe wurden konfisziert und ihnen droht in Bezug auf ihre Arbeit als Künstler*innen und Filmemacher*innen ein Gerichtsverfahren. Die Berlinale setzt sich grundsätzlich für Rede- und Meinungsfreiheit sowie die Kunstfreiheit für alle Menschen auf der Welt ein. Small Things Like These Starring Cillian Murphy Set to Open Berlinale
The 74th Berlin International Film Festival will open on February 15, 2024 with the world premiere of Small Things Like These, an Irish-Belgian production. Directed by Tim Mielants from a screenplay by Enda Walsh, the international cast includes Cillian Murphy, Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley and Emily Watson. Small Things Like These will screen in Competition. The film is based on the book by the award-winning Irish writer Claire Keegan (who also wrote “Foster”, adapted into the Academy Award nominated Irish language film An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl)).
