Paralympic family grows to 208 as IPC welcomes five new members
Five new members were officially ratified on the first day of the General Assembly, bringing the IPC’s membership to 208 (183 NPCs). The new members are: the National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) of Bangladesh and Kosovo; Saudi Arabia, who previously were an NPC but are now an integrated NOC (National Olympic Committee)-NPC; the International Federations (IFs) of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), and the International Biathlon Union (IBU). Bangladesh becomes the 45th NPC from Asia; Kosovo the 49th from the European region; and FIS and the IBU are respectively the 16th and 17th IFs. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has disqualified the results of the Spanish Para snowboard athlete Victor Manuel Gonzalez Fernandez achieved at the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games after he was found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV). In its role as the major event organisation for the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games, the IPC was responsible for determining whether an ADRV had occurred when the athlete failed a doping control test during the period of the Games. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has finalised the medal event programme and athlete quotas for the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games. Milano Cortina 2026 will showcase 79 Paralympic medal events across six winter sports, with one new medal event – wheelchair curling mixed doubles – featuring for the first time at a Paralympic Winter Games. There will be 39 medal events for men, 35 for women, and five mixed events. IPC announces Manchester, UK as preferred location for World Para Athletics and World Para Swimming governing bodies
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced UK Sport and the British Paralympic Association (BPA) as its preferred partners to assist with the transfer of governance and the creation of independent bodies for the sports of Para athletics and Para swimming. The announcement follows a thorough process initiated in July 2021 when the IPC called for expressions of interest from organisations in relation to the takeover of the governance of one or both sports in their territories. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has banned Para powerlifting athlete Lasha Alelishvili for a period of two (2) years for committing an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV), in breach of the IPC Anti-Doping Code. The Georgian athlete returned an adverse analytical finding (AAF) for a Prohibited Substance in a urine sample provided in-Competition at the Tbilisi 2022 World Para Powerlifting European Open Championships on 24 September 2022. The substance was tamoxifen. The substance is included on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2022 Prohibited List under the class S4 Hormone and Metabolic Modulators.
