    Bahrain to host 2023 IPC General Assembly

    The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has confirmed that its 2023 IPC General Assembly and Conference will be hosted by NPC Bahrain, in Manama, between 27-29 September 2023. The General Assembly is the supreme authority of the IPC and last met remotely in December 2021, when the President and a new Governing Board were elected. No elections will take place in Manama, with the next ones taking place in 2025. More than 300 attendees from the IPC’s 209 members made up of National Paralympic Committees, International Federations, Regional Organisations, and International Organisations of Sport for the Disabled are expected to attend.     IPC announces World Para Sports Unit Board members

    The newly appointed World Para Sports Unit Board has held its first meeting on Friday (21 April) following the introduction of the five board members. The Board has been established by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Governing Board with the authority to govern the six Para sports the IPC serves as the International Federation for (Para athletics, Para dance sport, Para ice hockey, Para powerlifting, Para swimming and shooting Para sport).     Para ice hockey athlete Konstantin Shikhov has been sanctioned with an 18-month period of ineligibility for his commission of an anti-doping rule violation (“ADRV”).

    On 16 November 2021, the athlete provided an in-competition urine sample, which was analysed and found to contain Chlorthalidone, a prohibited substance. Chlorthalidone is listed in class S5 (Diuretics and Masking Agents) of the Prohibited List, and its use without a Therapeutic Use Exemption (“TUE”) is prohibited both in and out of competition. On 14 December 2021, the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (“RUSADA”) notified the athlete he may have committed ADRVs under Articles 4.1 and 4.2 of the All-Russian Anti-Doping Rules (presence and use of a prohibited substance).     At an Extraordinary General Assembly in Berlin, Germany, on Wednesday (16 November 2022), International Paralympic Committee (IPC) member organisations voted to suspend the National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) of Russia and Belarus. The decision by IPC members to suspend NPC Russia and NPC Belarus stems from their inability to comply with their membership obligations under the IPC Constitution.     Record 33 sports bid for LA28 Paralympic Games inclusion

    A record 33 Para sports have submitted applications to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to be considered for inclusion in the LA28 Paralympic Games sport programme. International Federations with sports on the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games programme, as well as recognised International Federations, had until 4 July 2022 to submit completed applications to the IPC. All International Federations with sports in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games programme put forward applications, together with arm wrestling, climbing, CP football, golf, karate, Para dance sport, powerchair football, sailing, surfing, and wheelchair handball.     The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has transferred the governance of Para biathlon to the International Biathlon Union (IBU) as of 13 July 2022

    Para biathlon will be managed by the IBU in cooperation with the International Ski Federation and Snowboard (FIS) through a joint Steering Committee. Para biathlon will be integrated into FIS’ general Para sport initiative with the IBU supporting with technical knowledge of biathlon and helping to further develop and improve the competition structure from low-level events through to World Cups and World Championships. Given Para biathlon and Para cross-country share many of the same athletes it was agreed a coordinated approach was necessary to maximise efficiencies and opportunities for the athletes.
