The tenth edition of WAN-IFRA’s Digital Media India (DMI) conference was held virtually from 2 to 4 March, with more than 200 news media executives from over 15 countries in attendance. The Hindu Group was named "Champion Publisher of the year" on the occasion of the South Asian Digital Media 2020 Awards Ceremony. WAN-IFRA launches a new programme in the Middle East to drive newsroom transformation towards reader revenue success
A programme tailored to pioneering Middle Eastern newsrooms, the Newsroom Transformation Programme 2021 will be launched on May 18, 2021. It will provide intensive coaching, training and mentoring over three months to senior editorial and commercial participants. Ten selected news publishers across the Middle East will be able to speed up the transformation of their newsrooms to ensure they are both audience-centric and sustainable. The participants will be drawn from the 10 news organisations which are selected from applications by WAN-IFRA members in the region. A formal call for applicants will go out next week. WAN-IFRA Announces New Media Freedom Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa
The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) announces a new DKK 6.5M (€900k) partnership with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to support media freedom in nine countries across Sub-Saharan Africa. WAN-IFRA will work with print and digital media organisations in Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe to improve the safety of journalists and the security of newsrooms, increase media-led advocacy around press freedom and gender-related issues, provide high-level business and editorial management support, and offer financial assistance to strengthen public interest reporting. The Washington Post Press Freedom Partnership, a public service initiative from The Post to promote press freedom worldwide, today announced the addition of WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers, to its growing coalition of partners. New WAN-IFRA research on sexual harassment in the media workplace in Southeast Asia
WAN-IFRA Women in News (WIN) and City, University of London, are now entering the second phase of a major research study into sexual harassment in the media workplace. In this second phase, the survey will look at the extent of this problem in select Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam. This phase of the research will run from November 2020 until March 2021, following an initial phase which collected responses from Africa, specifically Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) has decided to postpone the 73rd World News Media Congress, which was to be held in June 2021. The event is now scheduled in Taiwan from 28 to 30 September 2021.
